Credit card companies offer their best deals (low rate, low fees, high credit limit, big rewards) to customers with good or excellent credit history. For those with imperfect credit rating, finding a reasonable deal can prove to be a challenge.

Use a Credit Card to Recover from Bad Credit

It is a relief that you can actually get a good credit card despite having a poor credit rating. Furthermore, this can be used to repair your damaged credit. Yes, getting approved is easy but don't forget to spend time comparing your options.

Remember that there are many sub-prime credit cards in the market and some of them are associated with high interest rates and expensive fees. Also, take note that not all credit cards for bad credit offer credit reporting to the major credit bureaus. Credit reporting is a very important provision for people who aims to improve their credit history by using their credit cards.

With a secured card, an applicant is also required to submit a cash deposit. The amount can range from $300 to $500 and above, depending on the Issuer of the card. The cash deposit will determine the value of your credit limit. A much lower or higher credit line than the amount deposited will be offered by some Issuers. This is a major requirement as the funds deposited will be used for repayment in case the cardholder defaults.

Some bad credit credit cards offer an instant upgrade to an unsecured account after at least 12 months of consistent payment. Some cards will only give an upgrade after the cardholder has made the request. Remember that switching to an unsecured account will give you the privilege to get a lower APR and a higher credit line.

Strategies to Rebuild Bad Credit

There are three important strategies on using a credit card for bad credit. First is to get a card that offers credit reporting provision. Second is to choose a card with reasonable rates and fates. Last but not least, to use the card regularly and be timely with your payments.

Although credit cards for bad credit are expected to have a slightly higher APR than standard credit cards, the interest rate costs can be eliminated by paying off your full outstanding balance each month. Bear in mind, that submitting only the minimum required due can cost you a lot more than your original balance. Why pay these additional charges when you can avoid them simply by making full payments on time?

Use your credit card for important purchases at least once a month to improve your credit score more quickly. If you will only keep your card in your wallet and not use it, you will not be able to improve your credit history. Remember that you need to show creditors that you are indeed, a responsible borrower and worthy of credit.

Before signing up for a bad credit credit card, read the fine print. If there are certain clauses that you do not understand, do not hesitate to do more research or ask an explanation from the bank's representative.

If I get one of those bad credit credit cards will it help me rebuild credit?

I just want to get one and cut it up and pay the fees they have on it off and never use the card so that they will report to the credit agencies. I have a 530 credit score now. If I did this and kept paying my other accounts on time, how long until I get to a 650?

Answer
Im not sure this is the best option for you. Even if you get a "bad credit" credit card there is many fees associated with it. If you insist on doing this read the fine print carefully. Many of the "bad credit" credit cards have monthly fees for being part of their program or a huge annual membership fee that is broken down into monthly fees. So even if you don't use the card they will still be charging you a monthly fee. Even if you get a credit card your score will not rise that quickly. The only thing that will make it go up is time, time that is passing making the bad items on your report get old. I implore you not to get one of these "bad credit" credit cards. Too many people have come to me for help and I have often seen these types of cards making their bad credit worse. Best of luck!
